New NYC Textile Recycling Program Will Keep 200,000 Tons of Clothing Out of Landfills

Tired of schlepping your hand-me-downs all over town just to recycle them? You might not need to for much longer. City officials are teaming up with Housing Works, an organization dedicated to helping homeless people affected by HIV/AIDS, to create Refashion NYC – a new textile recycling program where clothing can be donated, using specially marked containers located throughout various apartment buildings in New York City.

Textile Recycling Added To Sustainability Festival In Amherst

Even though people frequently use collection boxes to drop off used clothing for agencies that distribute and sell it, many of the items still end up in landfills and incinerators. The Recycling and Refuse Management Committee is trying to change that, and also help the Fisher Home Hospice Shop and the Amherst Survival Center’s free store, by sponsoring Amherst’s first textile collection at this year’s Sustainability Festival on April 21.
