An international group of runners made their way through Fremont Sunday as part of the World Harmony Run torch relay to promote peace and harmony worldwide.
World Harmony Day was started in 1987 by Sri Chinmoy to show that world peace was an achievable goal, according to group runner and coordinator Rupasi Young.
Young, a Seattle resident, waited by a support van Sunday as fellow runner Harita Davies ran down State Street.
She said there was a group of men and women’s runners participating in the American leg of the relay, which started in April in New York City and ends there Aug. 15.
“It’s pretty cool to see America in that way,” Young said.
The runners went through Toledo Saturday, and Young estimated the group put in a combined 80 to 100 miles daily on their trip.
She said there were runners in her group from New Zealand, Ukraine, Russia and Finland.
The torch relay will continue in Europe through October, she said.
During the spring, runners paid visit to schools to talk to children about the group’s peace initiative. Young said those outreach efforts continued in the summer at community centers across the United States.
Young said people on the road have been supportive of the World Harmony runners.
“It’s a really positive response. A lot of people honking and waving. People seem to appreciate what we’re doing,” Young said.
