Cross-Species Connections: Two Amazing Stories of Animal, Human Contact

Editor’s Note: In their 2010 show entitled “Animal Minds” Radiolab hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich explore connections and relationships between humans and animals. The stories below depict two equally awe-inspiring encounters between human divers and sea mammals and begs the question, is it possible for humans and animals to truly understand each other? Listen and decide for yourself.
Author Paul Theroux critiques the act of anthropomorphizing and maintains that humans and animals cannot truly share with one another. But National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen counters that theory with a story of his amazing encounter with a leopard seal:
