GREENFIELD, MA – This spring there will be a NEW Western MA Science and Sustainability Expo in Greenfield offering opportunities for 4th- 12th grade youth and their parents and teachers. Educators, homeschoolers, and others can learn about this opportunity on Thursday, Jan 26, from 4-5:30 pm at 50 Miles St. Greenfield, MA. The info session and the Expo are free. Refreshments will be served.
Greening Greenfield Energy Committee is working with Susan Reyes, Science and Sustainability Educator, to offer a new and unique opportunity for students, educators, and parents to share their science and sustainability projects or participate in nationally-recognized competitions and programs.
The competitive aspect of the event will focus on the KidWind Challenge, which is designed for students in 4-12th grades. Students will work in teams and learn about wind turbine physics as they design and build their unique turbine. At the event, the energy output of their turbines will be measured in a wind tunnel and be judged for innovative design and craftsmanship.
A non-competitive option at the Expo is for area youth and educators to showcase and share their science projects, initiatives, and resources that have the theme of sustainability.
Another opportunity – open to collaborative teams and individuals of all ages – is to design, build and display a model home or landscape for the Green Dollhouse Challenge. Parent and child teams, youth, college students and adults are encouraged to get involved.
“We are incredibly fortunate to be working with Susan Reyes, and to be able to offer this new opportunity,” said Nancy Hazard of the Greening Greenfield Energy Committee. “Susan brings wealth of experience as a science educator, event organizer, and a deep commitment to sustainability and informed decision-making skills. “Our new Expo offers an opportunity for youth and adults to role up their sleeves, get involved in a sustainability-oriented science project, and share it with our community. We hope this will inspire others to get involved in reinventing our future!”
Reyes, who worked for the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) for many years, is taking the lead with the Greening Greenfield Energy Committee (GGEC) on this project. GGEC uses ‘greening’ as an economic and inspirational engine to build a sustainable Greenfield so current and future generations can enjoy life in this beautiful abundant valley.”
Pre-registration for the workshop is encouraged but not required. To register, send an email to info@GreeningGreenfield.org. For more information call 413-259-1658 or go to www.GreeningGreenfield.org http://www.GreeningGreenfield.org
