February 1st, 2010
An eco-friendly family that has reduced its household waste to virtually nothing had their rubbish bin emptied today for the first time in a year.
And in 2010 the Strauss family aim to throw nothing away at all.
Rachelle, husband Richard and daughter Verona, eight, throw away an average of just 50g of litter every week – enough to fit in the palm of a hand.
Since then, they have recycled wherever possible, composted leftover food, and bought produce direct from local farmers to avoid using packaging.
The family, from Longhope, Gloucestershire, take their own containers to their butcher to avoid unnecessary wrapping and grow fresh fruit and vegetables.
Today they completed their challenge of filling the bin just once in the last year.
